Signs and Symptoms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration may not show any symptom during its first stages of development.  However, as it progresses one may develop one or more of the signs and symptoms below.
•    Straight lines appear  out of shape
•    Blurred vision
•    Difficulty reading, driving, or recognizing faces.
•    Inability to distinguish between two colors
•    Need for brighter light to perform regular tasks like reading
•    Smudged areas at the center of vision

Risk Factors

The factors that are likely to increase one’s risk of developing AMD include.
•    Old age
•    Cigarette smoking
•    Obesity
•    Taking a diet of highly processed foods with artificial fats
•    Hypertension 
•    Family history of AMD at old age

AMD Treatment

Ideally, there is no cure for Age-Related Macular Degeneration. However, there are several ways through which we can manage the condition to delay its progression alongside preventing blindness. 
Some of the options used in its management are laser therapy, photodynamic laser therapy, and anti-angiogenic drugs. Our optometrist will prescribe the right choice for your unique condition.
