Causes of Red Eye and Dry Eye: Symptoms, and Treatment from our Hendersonville Optometrists

Many people have experienced the occasional bout of dry eye- that itchy, dry irritated sensation, particularly outdoors in windy conditions. We squint, blink a few times and the discomfort disappears because our tears are doing their job.

For people who suffer from chronic dry eyes, however, all the eye drops, blinking and squeezing their eyes closed tightly is ineffective. Moreover, rubbing their eyes only intensifies the irritation and redness that often accompanies dry eye. Fortunately, your optometrist and friendly staff here at Hendersonville Eye Care can quickly discover the cause of your symptoms with a comprehensive eye examination. Once the cause is determined, we will develop a personalized treatment plan to restore your vision and eye wellness.

Dry Eye

This condition usually develops due to a problem with the way your body produces tears. Either the tears you produce are not of good quality, or your body just does not produce enough tears to lubricate the eye and protect the cornea from scratches and infection. Causes of dry eye include:

  • Diabetes or Thyroid disorder
  • Glaucoma
  • Immune disorders such as Sjogren’s syndrome and Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Environmental irritants- like smoke or wind
  • Computer Vision- people who work on computers tend to blink only one third as often as they should. Failure to blink inhibits tear production, which leaves the eyes vulnerable and unprotected by healthy tear film.
  • Heredity

Red Eye

When the sclera- or white part of your eye becomes red, it is often due to breakage of small blood vessels on the surface of your eye. (Rubbing your already painful eyes irritates them further).Pain, swelling, blurred vision and discharge accompanying the redness can be symptoms of a significant problem such as:

  • Conjunctivitis - infection
  • Corneal ulcers or infection
  • Injury to the eye
  • Allergies
  • Poor habits in the care or wearing of contact lenses.

Diagnosis and Treatment at Hendersonville Eye Care

Our optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye examination, which includes asking questions about your symptoms, work habits, overall health, and medications you take and family history of eye problems. Your eyes will be thoroughly examined and your vision evaluated tested and measured.

If our optometrist determines that your tear production or tear film quality is out of balance we will recommend appropriate treatment to correct the problem. Options may include:

  • Eye drops
  • Changes to your computer settings
  • Medication
  • Plugs to prevent rapid tear drainage
  • Lifestyle changes and home care

Best place to have eyes checked and cared for. I and my family have been going there for 10+ years. Dr. Kilgo is the best! I give out his name every chance I get.
