Frequently Asked Questions about LASIK
LASIK surgery is a major life decision, so if it's something you're considering, you've probably got a lot of questions. We've done our best to answer some of the most frequently asked questions below!
What does LASIK surgery entail?
LASIK surgery is a procedure that utilizes a high powered, precise laser to correct abnormalities in the shape of the cornea. This makes it effective in treating vision problems related to astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. When the cornea is reshaped, light can properly reach the retinas, allowing the eye to focus as needed.
Is everybody a good candidate for LASIK?
No, not everybody is an ideal LASIK candidate, which is why our optometrist offers evaluations in our office. These evaluations are designed to determine whether LASIK is right for you. Generally, those who are at least 18 years of age and who have had a stable vision prescription for at least a year are good candidates, but there are certain things (like pregnancy) that may prevent us from being able to refer you to a surgeon.
What can I expect from my LASIK results?
Not all LASIK patients will end up with perfect, 20/20 vision after their procedure, and there is no way to guarantee your results. However, most patients who have LASIK done go on to be able to perform most tasks, such as driving a car and watching television, without the need for glasses.
Is LASIK a painful procedure?
No! Anesthetic drops are used on the eyes prior to your surgery, so you won't feel any pain. Some patients report that they feel a light amount of pressure. If you experience any irritation as your eyes heal after the procedure, prescription eye drops can help you find relief.
How long will it take for me to recover from LASIK?
Generally, LASIK patients have no trouble returning to their typical way of life and activities as soon as 24 hours after their procedure. And within 48 hours, you should be able to enjoy all the benefits of your improved vision. However, you may be advised to avoid swimming and contact sports for a couple weeks after your procedure.
